In the Spring of 2001, David contacted REA (Research and Educational Association) about their great CLEP Prep books for several high school subjects. We were starting to make homeschoolers aware of how CLEPs could be used to "double credit" high school and college. During our discussions with then-REA president, Max Fogel, and their current president, Carl Fuchs, we learned that they hadn't yet published a CLEP Prep book in Biology! So David suggested that Laurie write it. REA agreed.

Laurie received a contract and went right to work on it. She wrote nine chapters of notes, along with three sets of practice tests and answers (with why the wrong answers are wrong) of over 100 questions each. It has actually been done for quite some time. However, publishers have their own time schedules, so we have been patiently waiting for it to come out.

While we waited, we received permission to use the book in our Biology and Natural Sciene CLEP Prep classes as a test-case study. We have learned that students have been successfully passing the 6-credit-hour CLEP Biology exam using Laurie's notes and practice tests, along with the other recommended sources that we have used, like the Cerebellum "STANDARD DEVIANTS" Videos and DVDs. It is great to know, even before the book is released that using it and supplemental materials are bringing success!

Not only our own children, but hundreds of homeschoolers across the country are using CLEP Prep notes to prepare for AND PASS several of the CLEP exams! BIOLOGY is just one of many!

Let us share our story:



As our children completed high school, we found that they were more than prepared to test out of college subjects. We began to realize that if they just studied for CLEP exams in the same ways that they did for their final exams in any subject, they could pass these exams and show that they were capable of gaining college credit at the same time they were getting high school credit.

This concept is called "double crediting." And it is something that even Laurie did when she was a senior in high school! But we know as a fact that many homeschooling parents are nervous about their children taking Introductory Biology in college. The unbalanced evolutionary bias that is presented causes concern. We think it is much better to study and take this course in the confines of the home, where the difficult biological questions can be discussed with parents and other Christians who appreciate the creation worldview. Pretty strong words! But this is what David truly believes about his public school education. Not until he was almost 20 did David gain an understanding that evolution, as defined by Darwinism, was not the only viable and intellectually acceptable worldview that explained the origin of things and why we are here. We decided that this would not be our children's fate.

Whether one wants to accept biblical creation as an acceptable worldview or not is not the issue. It's whether a student is being given all of the reasonable options with which to make an intelligent, informed decision on his or her own. This is what was denied to David and for which he now has devoted his life to see that it doesn't continue to happen.

Not only has David come to an understanding that alternative worldviews exist, but he is firmly convinced that the biblical worldview, including a belief in biblical creationism, is a more reasonably acceptable position than the evolutionary Darwinism in which he was indoctrinated in the public schools. (And over 90 percent of children in America are still being taught it without the opportunity to see much of the contrary evidence.)

But this doesn't need to be the case in your home!

However, you need to know where to get good information!

Fortunately we were taught by ICR scientists when we were in college. For example, Laurie studied Biology under Dr. Gary Parker as her advisor. She brings that balanced knowledge of biology to this CLEP Prep resource. However, there is another problem that students and parents must know.

If you want to pass the CLEP, you must understand the evolution. But that can be done without having to compromise your creationist worldview! In fact, we believe that understanding both models makes students better scientists and better students!

One question we always get is how this CLEP Prep situation fits in with studying by using one of the standard high school Biology courses using textbooks from Apologia (Dr. Jay Wyle), Bob Jones University Press, ABeka Publishing, or some other homeschooling curriculum?

Our response: These courses are great to give a homeschooler an overview of Biology, . . . .
BUT it is more than likely that they won't pass the CLEP without a good CLEP Preparatory study because . . .
the student doesn't get the overview of evolution that is needed to pass this exam!

Here's the fact: Your student may have a good concept of Biology from a Christian perspective, but he or she will have difficulty passing the college-level examination from just studying one of these textbooks. That's not a flaw in the books, but rather a fact of the bias of these college-level examinations.
