We are glad that you are considering seriously this very helpful tool for you and your children. This Planner is designed around the things that we did with our five children to help them complete high school well. All five of our kids are our “validation” of the value of the “Grand Plan” concept. Let us share their stories:
Jeremiah, now 26, graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2004 as a business major from Roberts Wesleyan College. He is already serving Christ as a leader in the area of worldview studies. He attended the Focus On The Family Institute in the Fall of 2001 on a partial scholarship from Summit Ministries due to his work for them as a youth counselor. Jeremiah married Kim Keeley, on May 31, 2003, with whom he developed a careful, pure and loving relationship over the prior five years. Kim also graduated Summa Cum Laude from Roberts the same day as he did with a nursing degree. Jeremiah completed his high school work early in his 17th year. College has been very easy for Miah; he's now pursuing graduate studies at Denver Seminary. The Grand Plan wasn’t named such when he used it, but the concepts helped him to get focused. Laurie used a prototype of our current Planner to help Miah and his two sisters to stay organized and focused during their high school studies.
We are obviously very proud of Miah, who now works for the Focus On The Family Institute as their Director of Admissions. Prior to that, he worked for Summit Ministries as the Associate Director of the Worldview Team at Bryan College. If you are interested, he would love to invite homeschoolers and Christian students who have at least 45 college credits to consider enrolling for a semester at the Focus On The Family Institute. If you're interested, please write him at jeremiah.callihan@fotf.org
Jeremiah and Kim have also allowed us to move to the next level of homeschooling recently with the birth of our first grandson, Nehemiah, who was born on March 3, 2006! The next generation of homeschooling parents is quickly growing, and now includes Miah and Kim. (And they are expecting again in the early part of 2008! Woohoo!)
Rebekah, also married a fantastic homeschooled young man named Bob Warner on June 14, 2003, just two weeks after Jeremiah and Kim were married. She graduated along with Jeremiah and Kim from Roberts Wesleyan. Bekah and Kim were best friends as young girls. She completed her high school work at the age of 15, worked at a local Christian bookstore for a few years, and studied to “CLEP out” of her first year of college, starting as an accelerated sophomore student. You can learn more about this CLEP idea at our website, www.clepclasses.com. Bekah did quite well in college. She was inducted into the National Nursing Honor Society (one of only two students to achieve this honor in her school in her junior year). The ideas in our Grand Plan helped her to be organized and disciplined as she prepared for her life-long calling to be a nurse. She is well on her way, working as a professional nurse in a hospital here in Central Florida. However, there has been a "break in the action" recently. Rebekah gave birth to our second grandchild, a girl named Eden Michaela, who was born on December 20th. She and Bobby plan to have Bekah stay home and homeschool little Eden (they have already picked her name). But not to be idle, Bekah has recently written a set of CLEP Prep notes in Chemistry, and is also writing a test prep book for Practical Nursing that REA is publishing soon. The skills Bekah learned in her Grand Plan are paying off!
Katie too was married in the same summer of 2003! Yes, we had three weddings in our household in the same summer of 2003! She married Shawn Romano on August 19, 2003 . Shawn, who is also homeschooled, graduated in August 2004 from Savannah School of Art and Design. He was hired by Relevant Magazine to head up their video production department. In early 2007, Shawn left Relevant and ventured out into his own video production business--Another homeschooler entrepreneur! Katie has several accomplishments to her credit. She completed her high school work at the age of 14. She then worked for a few years at the same Christian Bookstore as Rebekah did. One of the highlights of this experience for her is that she managed the Music Department of the store by the time she was 17, and traveled to Nashville at the store’s expense to attend the Christian Bookstore segment of the Gospel Music Association Convention. As the manager of the store, she was responsible for the purchasing of the music. Her attendance at that convention was to learn about the latest products and the artists who were ministering to Christians that she would need to know in order to do her job. She began college at the age of 18, majoring in Architecture at Onondaga County Community College. She exceeded our expectations when she graduated in May, 2003 with her Associates Degree as the highest scoring student in her department, with a 4.0 GPA (she did it in 3 semesters) and won several academic awards and scholarships. But her desire is to be a wife and mother. Yet she plans to complete her Bachelors degree in the next few years, Lord willing. She has started her junior year here in Florida. She is excelling in her work, having been promoted to the position of Project Manager at the architectural firm where she works. She also owns her own architecture design company as well. We believe that the Grand Plan was a major tool that was used to give Katie direction and motivation at the age of 12 to diligently complete her high school work in just a couple of years.
Josiah, who is now 21 years old, and no, he isn’t married yet, just engaged to be in the near future to Constance Fedoro, another homeschooling graduate who is an incredible photographer, that she learned as a homeschooler. In 2003, he took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and scored in the 94th percentile. His recruiter says it is the highest score he has ever seen in the Syracuse area. We think that Josiah has proven to us that the ideas in the Grand Plan are valuable and work well. Josiah was not a book learner. At times his outwardly “relaxed” attitude about study made us think he wasn’t getting it. But obviously our Grand Plan concepts were helping him to learn what he needed to know for the ASVAB! He completed technical school and had over a 99 percent average. He was at the very top of his class in his first module! He even received a certification from the Commandant of the Air Force training base. The second module, he was in the top of his class too. We now think that Josiah is one of the best examples to show that all of the concepts that we are sharing are valuable and relevant for all types of homeschoolers to use. He has already completed the credits required for an Associates degree through the Community College of the Air Force, where he has already accumulated over 50 credits toward his degree! He attended the Family Institute last winter. How does he plan to get the other credits toward his Bachelors degree, you ask? By doing CLEPs, of course. He is now enrolled at the University of Phoenix for their online degree in Computer Science. And this is our son who took his sweet time in high school! So relax, parent, and watch what God can do. We can say that now, looking back. But we hope it encourages you too.
Wesley, our youngest son, at age 19 has completed his high school subjects and most of his Musical Theater degree at Bryan College in Tennessee in three years, where he is a double major in Political Communications. As you might imagine, he is a very diligent and focused student who took between 18 and 21 credits every semester to accelerate his learning, while "CLEPping" other courses at the same time. His has maintained nearly a 3.8 GPA as well. One of the things that Wesley did with us in 2003 was to travel the country helping us teach “CLEP Prep Classes” in U.S. History, Psychology, Sociology, Biology, Natural Science, and others. He is also an accomplished actor, having already done some semi-professional roles in several productions, like "Oliver!", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", and "The Music Man." He is also a talented singer. His goal is to eventually be in the performing arts, either in a Christian band, Broadway, or in television and the silver screen, maybe even as a producer. Again, the Grand Plan helped him to gain his vision for the future.
Each of our children used the Grand Plan as their means to get the vision to prepare them to bear fruit in their lives. The proof is in the results. They have become wise and prepared young people in spite of us in many ways!
Using our Christian Homeschool Daily Planner and The Parent’s Guide for the Christian Homeschool Daily Planner are two tools we used (not as nice as these, but most of the same concepts). We think they are resources that you might find helpful to avoid having to “rebuild the wheel.” We trust they will be useful tools for you and your children.
One more point about the Planner: We gave it away for free last year and charged $2.00 last year, but are charging $20.00 again this year. The reason for this is because sales dropped off significantly last year. Some of our advisers think that we may have given the wrong idea by pricing it so low last year. It's not a cheap product at all. This is a high quality planning calendar, similar to those produced by companies like Franklin Planner, Daytimer, and others of that level. we think it is important to recoup something for the work it takes to build the product. It takes David nearly a month of work to prepare it for the next school year. We think you will agree that the minimal $20.00 fee is well worth the price of just one Planner and Parent's Guide, but we offer this for your entire family!
